Sauerbraten

Has anyone else played this game? It has an amazing in-game multiplayer editor, which makes it kind of like Second Life with guns. This is the first 3D engine I've been really excited about, mainly because (a) the editor is awesome (b) it's cross-platform, and (c) it's amazingly fast, even on my old Athlon 2000+ box.

If anyone ever wants to collaborate on a 3D game, this should be the engine we use.

Re: Sauerbraten

A Smiley-themed FPS would be goddamn ridiculous. You should totally do it. DO IT NOW. I AM HEAH.

Re: Sauerbraten

Smile Kombat 3D? With bubbles and everything? That would be awesome.

Re: Sauerbraten

That would be interesting indeed. I meant something like... uh, Doom... or some more recent example. I've never seen a shooting game like that with cartoony graphics.

Re: Sauerbraten

Well, it would have to be more like Doom or something, but there's no reason we can't use things like the SK weapons (and maybe change up the gameplay a little bit).

Just off the top of my head, here are some things from SK that would be cool to port to a 3D game:
* One-way platforms
* The seeker missle
* That push gun thing
* The idea of having only 1 weapon at a time (makes you be more selective about picking things up)
* Life represented by a small group of hearts instead of a number (so you know exactly how many times you need to shoot someone with any given weapon, etc)

Bouncing weapon bubbles wouldn't work so well in a huge 3D space, so they'd have to be mostly stationary (or maybe confined to a limited area). I do like the idea of having weapon spawning be mostly randomized, so you can't just head for the Seeker bubble when you want one.

Re: Sauerbraten

That's cool. Both ideas could work, I think. A Doom-style game could function as an "adventure" mode and the SK thing would work as a multiplayer option. Either one would probably do well independently though.

Re: Sauerbraten

If we had a single player game, I would like to make an action RPG platformer thing. The Sauerbraten team is working on "Eisenstern," a similar game using the FPS game's engine... I can see that being a lot more work than multiplayer though, unless anyone knows someone who loves making 3D models.

Re: Sauerbraten

Check out WarSow... its a Quake 3 like DM game with cel shaded graphics. It looks and plays really well, plus its free.
